9 Important $kills for Talking About Money Webinar Recap

If you were among the 167 participants in Dr. Victor Harris’ June 26th web conference, we thank you for joining in.  For the first time Military Families Learning Network hosted our conference on the DOD/DCA web conferencing system and we were thrilled to see such a large turn out.

Dr. Harris shared with participants the 9 important communication skills curriculum based on Dr. John Gottman’s work with couples and communication within relationships. Of note were the “4 Don’ts of Communication,” which include:

  1. Criticism
  2. Defensiveness
  3. Contempt
  4. Withdrawing

Dr. Harris discussed alternatives to these emotions by detailing 5 skills to use in tense situations:

  1. Calm down
  2. Speak non-defensively
  3. Use specific complaints
  4. Validate
  5. Overlearn the 9 skills

Discussion of financial topics can frequently lead to arguments and stress among couples; adopting these skills will assist families to effectively discuss and manage their finances.

Dr. Harris and many participants shared some of their favorite resources for communication and financial topics. If you have others to share, please leave them in the comments section.

The DOD/DCA web conference hosting system requires the installation of security certificates on computers not located on military installations. If this prevented you from joining this conference, please review these instructions for installation on a PC. If you are using a Mac, or if you need assistance in installing the certificates on a PC, please email Anne Adrian at aadrian@extension.org. We hope all interested participants will be able to make the installation in advance of our upcoming retirement series in July.

However, you still have the opportunity to earn the 1.5 CEUs from the 9 Important $kills for Talking About Money web conference by reviewing the archived recording of the presentation and taking a short quiz. Instructions for registering for the quiz website can be found here.

Please check out information about upcoming July retirement series. The first, on July 10 at 2 p.m. ET, will cover the wide variety of options for retirement savings. The second, on July 25 at 1 p.m. ET, will focus on the Thrift Savings Plan. Please save the dates for this wonderful series.  We hope to see you there!

Home Ownership: When is the right time?

The Personal Finance group will present a web conference on the largest financial transaction most individuals or families make: purchasing a home. On May 8 at 2:30 p.m. ET, N.C. Extension Agent and certified housing counselor, Jayne McBurney, M.S. and Dr. Carolyn Bird, Principal Investigator of the Military Families Learning Network’s Personal Finance Professional Development Project, will present this important topic.

There are a myriad of factors to consider before the purchase of a home. This decision can be more complex for military families who have the consideration of relocation. This conference will cover:

  • The home buying process
  • Financial readiness
  • How to determine housing affordability and service-related considerations

Selected research articles and online resources have been identified to enhance this presentation for participants.

AFC-credentialed participants will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEUs from AFCPE for participating in this 90-minute web session.

To join the session, log on as “guest” here: https://connect.extension.iastate.edu/milfam just a few minutes before 2:30 p.m. on May 8. No registration is required.

Implications of Relatives Raising Children While Parents are Deployed Webinar Re-cap

If you were able to join the Thursday, April 5  Personal Finance web presentation by Dr. Sandra Bailey, you were in for a treat. Dr. Bailey shared her expertise on the topic of grandparents and other kinship raising children while parents are deployed or otherwise unable to care for their children.  Dr. Bailey provided great information and identified numerous resources addressing the logistics of loco in parentis (or in place of the parent) parenting.

The web conference participants proved also to be a great asset as they engaged and expanded the conversation. The 154 or so participants shared their own experiences and knowledge from working with military service members. These stories and resources enriched this webinar tremendously, and their participation is  valued.

For example, one participant shared her experience of raising her two granddaughters while her daughter is deployed with the Air Force.  She has chronicled her experiences in her blog, Deployed Grandma, in the hopes of providing information that may be useful to others going through similar situations. Part of the rich dialogue during the conference was the sharing of online spaces offering support for caregivers.  Sites shared, to name a few, include Families Near and Far and the National Respite Network.  It is vitally important that caregivers receive support, and take the occasional break from raising children.

Special concerns related to grandparents raising grandchildren were also raised during the presentation. Many “GRGs” are still working and are doubly stressed by the responsibility of caring for children, a second time around, or “off-time parenting.” Not only is their time stretched to meet these roles, but they may also find their peers are unable to relate to their new responsibilities.

Below are some of the resources you shared during this presentation. Did I leave something out? If so, please leave your resource in the comments section.

If you were unable to join the live presentation of this webinar, please check http://learn.extension.org/events/458, where an archived recording of the session will be posted soon.
